More gorillas

Welcome to a Conservation Blog. This continues to be a test. Here’s the WCS on some good news:

The world’s population of critically endangered western lowland gorillas received a huge boost today when the Wildlife Conservation Society released a census showing massive numbers of these secretive great apes alive and well in the Republic of Congo.

Here’s a short run-down from the NY Times, and a piece from NPR. Meanwhile, a new report suggests that many logging deals in the DRC are not meeting standards and should be canceled. WCS and other NGOs appear to be leveraging their gorilla findings to push for the establishment of a national park in the area; the policy grind on things like sustainable forestry continues.
